バロック
バロック（仏：baroque）とは、16世紀末から18世紀初頭にかけヨーロッパ各国に広まった美術・文化の様式。狭義には17世紀の芸術を特徴づける言葉をさすのに用いられるが、広くは同時代の生活態度全般を特徴づける言葉である。バロック芸術は秩序と運動の矛盾を超越するための大胆な試みとして始まった。カトリック教会の対抗改革（反宗教改革運動）や、ヨーロッパ諸国の絶対王政を背景に、建築、絵画、彫刻などの分野で、動的にうねった造形や、凝った装飾を多用したり、強烈な光の対比を使うなど、劇的な空間を作り出そうとする新しい表現傾向が現れた。芸術運動としては一過性に終わったが精力的に過ぎたこの運動によって、調和のとれた明快なルネサンス美術は破壊された。
